Cavitation in rubber:an elastic instability or a fracture phenomenon?

Making use of a new defect-growth theory (Lopez-Pamies et al.,Journal of the Mechanicsand Physics of Solids,59,(2011) 1464–1487) together with full-field simulations,we carry out acritical analysis of whether cavitation in elastomeric solids is an elastic instability or a fracturephenomenon,a long outstanding problem on the initiation of damage in soft solids.
