Linear fracture mechanics of piezoelectric materials has been investigated rather intensivelyin the last decades.However,most smart ceramics as PZT are polycrystals composed of grainswith ferroelectric domains causing a non-linear electro¬mechanical behavior.At present,non-linear fracture phenomena in ferroelectric materials are a problem of intensive current research.The presentation will attempt to review the state-of-the-art in this growing research field.An introduction is given into the electromechanical field theory of non-linear ferroelectric behavior,mani'sted by the macroscopic polarization- and associated strain-hysteresis.
