GRC IN USE FOR SERVICE CARRIERS AT THE LONDON EXHIBITION CENTRE

This paper concerns the application of glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC) on a major project - the new London Exhibition Centre (ExCel) - built by Sir Robert McAlpine for the newly formed client ExCeL pic. The intention is to document the sourcing, development, manufacture, testing and installation of a new GRC product applied to a major civil engineering contract. The specification requirements for load-carrying capacity, fire resistance, abrasion resistance and other properties were very demanding, as was the need to produce and install 6500 units within six months. The information is intended to be of interest to those involved in the manufacture and installation of GRC.
