EMAS 2016 Welcome and Opening Address

As President of the European Microbeam Analysis Society I am very pleased to be able to welcome you all to this, our 26th EMAS meeting and our 12th Regional Workshop. The Regional Workshops were started in 1994 and have been run every two years since then, in the alternate years between our European Workshops which have themselves been running since 1989. Whilst the European workshops focus on the leading edge of microanalysis these Regional Workshops provide tutorial lectures starting from fundamental principles to introduce students, technicians, and anyone else who is new or just entering into these fields. The workshops are moved around Europe to allow access to people who may not have the option to readily travel to international conferences. They are designed to be informative, affordable, and just as importantly, enjoyable.
