In waste incineration plants, energy is recovered from combustion gases by tube walls in which water circulates. Consequently, the temperature of the hot gases decreases along the different sections of their circulation path. In grate fired incinerators, the first pass, above the combustion chamber, is designed so that gas temperature decreases from about 1200℃ in the combustion zone down to about 800℃ in the upper part of the first pass. Except for this upper part where Inconel cladded tubes may be used, a refractory lining protects the metal tubes against temperature and corrosion.
