Slide gate valve (SV) plates are made of Al_2O_3-C material, and decarbonization of the material causes surface damage in the throttling area. However, methods for evaluating the resistance to decarbonization by molten steel are not reliable. We investigated the reaction between molten steel and the plate materials at 1600℃ by using a Tammann furnace. The reaction test reproduced the difference in the decarbonization resistance among the plate materials. In conclusion, it was confirmed that this test method is useful for evaluating the resistance to surface damage of the throttling area by reproducing the reaction with molten steel.
