This paper investigates the application of a new calcium-magnesium-aluminate (CMA) cement to dense castable formulations for steel-making refractories. Polycarboxylate-ether based additives are used together with the new cement in alumina-magnesia castables to provide excellent placing properties at a low water demand as measured by flow, exothermic reaction and ultrasonic techniques. Coupling the new cement with these additives gives rise to castables which present optimal placing properties without the difficulties often associated with use of magnesia in castables. At the same time, it is demonstrated that this new cement/additive system develops a superior corrosion resistance and high temperature performance compared to reference castables.
