The G20 have declared their commitment to progressively phase down HFCs. The EU isrneffectively banning HFC-134a as refrigerant for the use in mobile air conditioning (MAC) from 2017.rnConsequently, the industry is developing new MAC systems deploying low-GWP refrigerants. As the largestrnpassenger car producing country the future choice of alternative refrigerants in China will have importantrnglobal implications.rnThe paper will derive potential alternative refrigerant MAC systems available for China, considering alsornspecific total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) estimations according to climate and other conditions.rnFurther it will evaluate other relevant aspects for future choices of MAC systems in China such as systemrncosts, safety of the systems and the environmental impact of emissions.rnThe use of low-GWP natural refrigerants, such as R744 (carbon dioxide) and hydrocarbons in MAC systemsrnwould mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in China. Under certain conditions, they representrncompetitive options for the rapidly developing automotive sector.
