Foam ― A Value-Adding Tool for the Next Millennium

Foam is emerging as the fluid of choice for many wells that are candidates for underbalanced drilling. With its low weight and flexibility as a drilling fluid, it has exceptional cuttings transport ability, minimized lost circulation, and little adverse affects to the wellbore or environmentally sensitive areas. In addition to these inherent benefits, technological advances, such as better computer modeling and the corrosion inhibiting characteristics of foam, have improved the viability of foam and opened the door the even more possibilities. As the twentieth century draws to an end, operators are beginning to realize that traditional methods of oil recovery from ever-dwindling resources are becoming less effective. New methods will be needed and foam will truly become one of the value-added drilling tools for the next millennium.
