Many attentions have been given to the active classification of underwater man-made objects. And much work has been done on the scattering theory and classification of objects in free field but little on the waveguide case. This paper concerns the scattering and classification of objects located in shallow water. Echoes from several classes of spherical targets, such as rigid sphere and elastic shells of different material in waveguide, are numerically synthesized by Ingentio's Normal-mode formulation and corrupted with white gaussian noise to serve as a basis for classification study. The effect of waveguide boundaries on the classification performance is studied based on the backscattered spectrum or time series. The analysis results show that, the waveguide boundaries makes the classification work much more difficult than that in free space, and the degree to which the backscattered spectrum is disturbed by the boundaries has much relation to the sourcetarget distance, but the feature discriminability of the spectrum may has little to do with it.
