Closed Circuit Television for the River Protection Project - Waste Treatment Plant:A First Step towards Real Time Video over IP

Traditionally, closed circuit television (CCTV) systems for process monitoring of nuclear applications arernsized for less than fifty cameras. In contrast, surveillance systems, such as those used in airports and casinos includernhundreds of cameras. Another interesting difference between the two applications is in the video distribution. SurveillancernCCTV systems normally have a centralized control center. Video is switched through a matrix allowing an operator tornobserve facility activity from any camera that is attached to the system. CCTV systems for nuclear plants, by comparison,rnconsist of several decentralized workstations hardwired directly to subsets of camera units without a means of switching tornother subsets of camera units. The River Protection Project - Waste Treatment Plant (RPP-WTP) will be the world’s largestrnvitrification plant ever constructed. Due to the scope of this project, the size of the three main facilities, and the project’srnunique requirements, the RPP-WTP CCTV system will break tradition using a combination of fast Ethernet and analogrntechnologies to create a hybrid network that offers scalability and reliability in a manner never attempted before for arnnuclear application.
