Dear colleagues, distinguished scientists and students, I would first of all like to welcome you here in Padua at the 10th EMAS Regional Workshop on "Electron Probe Microanalysis of Materials Today - Practical Aspects", that includes a special session on electron backscatter diffraction technique. It is a real pleasure to see you so numerous and from so many countries. A special thank is due to the director of the Department of Geosciences (Prof. Cristina Stefani) for accepting to host this important scientific meeting and to the C.N.R. (National Research Council of Italy) for supporting the organization of the workshop with many facilities and to Dr. Luca Peruzzo, my co-chair in the organisation of the workshop.
