In this presentation I want to suggest that cities everywhere face three common challenges：rn 1.Economic：how to respond to the bewildering changes brought about by global restructuring and the resultant rapid changes in global economic geography；rn 2.Environmental：how to equip and re-equip cities tocombat the challenge of climate change；rn 3.Livability：how to restructure cities to promote a harmonious quality of life，and in particular how to combine this objective with the promoting a lively creative economy with a high capacity for innovation.In the paper I shall discuss each of these inturn,and then consider their specific implications for Chinesecities.
