The only way forward for the Western Australian Iobster industry

In early December, the Western Australian Fisheries Minister announced proposed closures of the lobster industry over the Christmas period, leaving only days before a decision was to be made. Even with reduced prices this was a critical production time for the industry. These measures alone were seen as able to bankrupt many C Zone [and some B Zone] fishers.Some commentators saw this as a move crafted by and for the benefit of northern fishermen at the expense of those in the south of the state. Some suggested that the larger part of the price collapse itself was due to certain business practices while thegovernment's intervention was seen as purely for market reasons. The industry, unsurprisingly is in turmoil.Below is one of the first reactions to the move from an industry association, followed by the minister's original letter.
