Discovery of Globodera hypolysi from mugwort, Artemisia montana, in the east of Hokkaido

Globodera sp. different from G. rostochiensis was detected at one of potato fields in Kotanuka, Shibetsu Town, Nemuro County, Hokkaido on Sep. 16, 1980. This species remarkably differed from G. rostochiensis in oval shape and small Granek's ratio (1.7) of cysts, and longer stylet (24 mu m) with anterior concaved knobs of second stage larvae. This specimen was most similar to Globodera hypolysi detected in Nagasaki Prefecture in morphological characteristics. This was parasitic on mugwort (Artemisiamontana), not on potato, tobacco and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in this test. From the above results, this specimen was identified as G. hypolysi. This nematode was detected from other four potato fields in the same town, and also from one potato field and sedimentation basin of starch factory in Abashiri City.
