Simplifying the chemical process for manufacturing surface-hydrophobic silica-based materials is an important subject of applied chemistry. For hydrophobizing the surface of silica microparticles, the main interest has been focused on treating the surface with trifunctional organosilanes. In the present study, we consider further simplification of the formation of surface-hydrophobic silica microparticles by the spontaneous growth of those microparticles in a low-permittivity reaction solvent. As stated below, the formation of the incipient SiO2-based core followed by the coverage with the hydrophobic silica layer from alkyl trifunctional organosilane was shown to result in the one-pot formation of surface-hydrophobic silica microparticles. Such an intra-particle polarity gradation was given rise to by using diethylamine as the reaction solvent as found by the authors.
