Operating Characteristics of Bicycle Groups: Statistics Analysis with the Data in Nanjing

This paper mainly studied the characteristics of bicycle groups, including bicycle group size and formation, velocity, headway, and abreast riding in a bicycle group. Four exclusive bicycle paths were surveyed with two cameras in Nanjing, China. Based on the statistical analysis on features of group cycling, bicyclists' preference is discussed, including the factors influencing bicycle group size, the velocity difference of bicycle group, and the definition of a bicycle group. The following conclusions are obtained: (a) bicyclists prefer to move alone, rather than follow others or ride abreast. This preference is stronger on a wider bicycle path; (b) high volumes and wide bicycle paths contribute to produce bigger bicycle groups; (c) more freedom is attached to a bicyclist in a small bicycle group. This leads to the noticeable velocity differences. The differences decline as bicycle group size grows.
