Analysis on Safety Characteristics of Stopping Behaviors at Intersections with Countdown- Type Traffic Signals

The impacts of countdown timers and CCTV on drivers' behavior were examined from a safety perspective by studying the profile of approaching speeds into the study intersections, in which the approach legs were divided into 10-meter intervals up to 90 meters upstream from the stop line. The data were statistically analyzed from various perspectives including a binary logistic regression for the stopping or traversing decision, regression analysis on the maximum acceleration and deceleration and their respective locations, and analysis of the profile of approaching speeds. The findings revealed that entering speeds to the intersections with countdown timers were 5-7 kph slower than without the timer. Furthermore, countdown timers and CCTV both can smooth approach speeds to the intersections and reduce sudden braking or acceleration because drivers tend to accelerate and decelerate earlier than at the intersection without either of the devices.
