The method involves transmitting operating parameters to a drive machine (11) e.g. internal combustion engine, depending on a temperature value of a starting clutch (13), where the parameters define power delivered by the machine. The value of the clutch is determined by computing the value in temperature computation as sum or sum integral from taken up and/or delivered energy component currents. Gear detection is executed in context of the temperature computation. Slip energy is determined on the basis of rotational speed of a drive engine and a clutch output speed calculation value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a power train.
