Oxford Scanning Proton Microprobe: Elemental Mapping of a Germinating Pollen Grain

The combination of Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and the scanning proton microprobe (SPM) represents a powerful multielemental mapping technique of great potential. Presented here is a brief description of the Oxford SPM together with an outline of the PIXE technique. Finally a specific example of the technique using the Oxford SPM is described and two dimensional elemental maps of a growing pollen grain are presented.
