Pig: Situation and Outlook

Pig meat has continued to benefit from its role as a substitute protein source when consumption in beef and poultry has declined as a result of disease related bans or consumer concerns. Other regions such as Mexico and Russia have seen increases in pig meat consumption as a result of higher domestic incomes. Production in 2005 continued to grow in most of the major producing regions of the world fuelled by good consumer demand. China continues to dominate as world leader in pig meat production and has benefited from efficiency gains due to improved breeds and feed conversion, Increased foreign investment will continue to boost efficiency and production within this important market. Production in most countries shown in the table is expected to continue to expand in 2006.
