Pig Meat: Situation and Outlook

World production of pig meat during 2011 is expected to be two per cent lower than in 2010, the first annual fall since 2007. The main reason was disease outbreaks in China and South Korea. Chinese production is expected to be three per cent lower asa result of health concerns, particularly affecting China's many backyard producers. The impact of disease in South Korea has been even more dramatic, with the FMD outbreak leading to a 25 per cent fall in production. Japan also saw declining productionfollowing the earthquake and tsunami in March. Most other major producers are expected to have increased production, despite the impact of high feed prices on profitability.
