Pig Meat: Situation and Outlook

Pig meat production in key countries in 2010 is expected to continue to rise with the exception of the United States and Canada. Government support continues to encourage increased production in China and Russia along with improved genetics and production practices. Improved economic conditions may lead to stronger demand for pig meat from Asia during the second half of 2010, particularly from China and Hong Kong. The lifting of H1N1 related trade bans in China will help to facilitate this trade. Russia is also expected to increase its import requirement as tight domestic supplies lead to high domestic prices which may encourage trade outside the quota. The EU and Brazil with increased production will be in a position to take advantage of this higher demand.
