The various outbreaks of avian influenza and the discovery of BSE in the US and Canada have created a positive opportunity for growth in pig meat production and consumption. Various import bans and a drop in consumer confidence in beef and poultry has increased demand for pig meat. However, the Russian import quota and increasing competition from Brazil has limited any rise in prices.
