Pig Meat: Situation and Outlook

There was some upturn in pig meat production in key countries in 2010, with the main exception of North America. Although profitability was under pressure from higher feed costs in the second half of the year productivity gains including higher carcase weights boosted output. However, pig numbers are no longer increasing, with the main exception of China, given the squeeze on profitability from ongoing high feed costs. Therefore the growth in global pig meat production could slow to only one per cent in 2011 compared with three per cent in 2010.
