Pig Meat: Situation and Outlook

There is expected to be some downturn in production in key countries in 2009 as profitability had been under pressure from high feed costs in 2008 and there were consequently cutbacks in pig numbers. Although feed costs fell towards the end of 2008 the pig market has not been particularly firm and profitability is still low. Pig numbers are falling sharply in the EU and North America with no indication of any upturn. Producers have been going out of business and there has been less investment in pigproduction.
