Fifteen oil bearing roses, not belonging to the group of Rosa damascena Mill, accessions and maintained in the collection of the Institute of Rose and Aromatic Plants (IRAP), Kazanlak and R. moschata, a putative ancestor of R.damascena were characterized with 11 SSR markers. The results revealed that two accessions (var. Novinka and var Ukrayna) have identical microsatellite profiles with R damascena, which rejects the preliminary data on their interspecific hybrid origin The microsatellite data doesnot support the putative genetic origin of another accession (var: "Kooperatorka") and suggests that R damascena is one of its parents. The comparison of the microsatellite profiles of R.damascena with its putative ancestor species, Rosa moschata and Rosa gallica reveals that they differ in all alleles at several SSR loci This eliminates the possibility, the studied accessions of this two species to be directly linked to the ancestor parents of R. damascena The oil bearing rose variety Stambolska (varStambolska), naturally growing in Bulgaria, was shown to be substantially different in its microsatellite profile from R.damascena and is philogenetically more close to R.moschata and R. alba Theuseofthe obtained microsatellite data for the management ofthe JRAP's collection and breeding program for oil rose improvement, based on interspecific hybridizations is discussed.
