Gujjar tribes and their migratory buffalo management system in Himachal Pradesh

Livestock productivity of migratory buffaloes in Himachal Pradesh is very low. Therefore, to suggest any remedial measure for their improvement, a diagnostic survey was conducted to understand the present situation with respect to these attributes, their severity and its impact on their economy etc. Non-desctipt animal breeds, imbalanced feeding, lack of health care and traditional livestock management practices adopted are the major causes for lower productivity of these migratory buffaloes. Problems faced by the migratory herders include lack of medicines and health care services around their places of stay in upper and lower areas, lack of grazing lands and shortage of fodder in lower areas, conflicts with forest staff, marketing of products in upper reaches, wild animal attacks etc.
