Coffee is a perennial crop generally grown on difficult terrains in India. Both Arabica and Robusta coffees are grown in India at different elevations which are suitable for the varieties. Coffee is cultivated under the two tier canopy of different species (nearly 200) of native as well as exotic shade tree like silver oak unlike in other coffee growing countries where most of the coffees are grown under open sun. The major reason to grow coffee under shade in India is the long dry period (3-5 months) prevailing in coffee growing tracts and to provide the required microclimate. Indian coffee both Arabica and Robusta have their own identity in the international market. Indian coffee growers ensure that they produce the best quality coffee to the satisfaction of traders, importers and consumers. To produce good quality coffee, it needs best cultivation and management practices to ensure sustainability as well as to satisfy the socio - economic and health aspects of both the grower and the employed work force. Coffee growers have to follow the recommended guidelines/ practices and adopt the suitable recommended technologies on time to produce the best coffee. Following are a few practical guidelines for growing quality coffee for long term sustainability.
