In their pioneering report on the diene synthesis,or the Diels-Alder reaction,Otto Diels and Kurt Alder recognized the profound impact that this pericyclic reaction would have in the syntheses of"complex compounds related to or identtical with natural products"and speculated that this process may also be nvolved in the biosyntheses of natural products.
