Aristotle's statement that the salamander is able to pass through fire unharmed and extinguishes the flames at the same time is surely incorrect and unproved.However,the capability of the salamander to regenerate its tail has been known for 235 years.In the middle of the 18th century the Italian scientist Lazarro Spallanzani wrote about the remarkable property of the adult animal to regenerate limbs,tail,and jaw lost after injury.Even today the salamander provides the best example of regeneration in animals.
