The synthesis and characterization of rigid aromatic macrocycles started when Sondheimer, Eglinton, and Gal-braith as well as Raphael, described the synthesis of the cyclic dimer of 1,2-diethynylbenzene. Since then, the synthesis and use of conjugated macrocyclic materials has exploded, as documented in a masterly review by lyoda et al. An important aspect of this research area is the total synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their cyclic or ribbonlike segments.
