Peptides are considered as viable therapeutic agents because of their superior specificity compared to small molecules and their smaller size relative to antibodies. However, the discovery of peptide drugs has been hampered by their short half-life and limited bioavailability. Many approaches have been explored to improve their pharmacokinetics including structural modifications, coadministration of competitive inhibitors, and various delivery systems.
