Alexei Vsevolodovich Nekrasov

Alexei Vsevolodovich Nekrasov, Professor at the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (formerly the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute) passed away on February 9, 2008, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, after a two-year long struggle with cancer. Alexei had wide ranging interests in Physical Oceanography, though his most beloved subjects were those of tidal dynamics and energetics. His scientific methods and philosophy were mostly in the style of Prof. V. V. Timonov, one of the founders of the tidal scientific community in USSR. They attempted to understand the tides in real seas through idealized theoretical models, while also using more detailed results from large-scale hydrodynamic numerical models.
