CRYOGENIC APPLICATIONS OF LABY COMPRESSORS: Laby Compressor for Boif-off Gas Offers Advantage for LUG Terminals and Carriers

The development of the LNG industry has led to the construction of many on land and offshore storing and receiving terminals as well as the construction of giant LNG carriers. Boil-off gas is unavoidable and it has to be handled when it accumulates at the top of the atmospheric cryogenic tanks at temperature around -256℉ (-160℃). The amount of boil-off is not only dependent on the plant size but mainly on the status. When the tanks are on hold, boil-off is minimum while during transfer operations (loading/unloading) it can grow 10 or more times. Boil-off can be processed in a liquefaction plant to return it to the LNG cryogenic tanks or for use as fuel gas to produce electric power or as fuel for propulsion systems for large LNG carriers.
