I am honoured to have been approached to be the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Royal Naval Medical Service. I'm very aware that I am the first Editor to sit outside the Institute of Naval Medicine, but I hope to bring some of the qualities that have driven an academic career into the editorial role. Having experienced numerous operational handovers on the tarmac, my thanks go to Surgeon Captain Howell who has generously endured a prolonged period of mentorship and collaboration, the result of which is this edition of the Journal. He has done a wonderful job of rejuvenating the Journal over his four-year tenure.
