Cardiovascular diseases, are a major cause of morbidity" and mortality in the western world. Cardiovascular diseases comprise a wide variety of disorders affecting blood vessels and the heart, including: coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertensive heart disease, aortic aneurysms, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, congenital heart disease, endocarditis and peripheral artery disease, among others. Despite significant clinical advancements over the last few decades, including rise in percutaneous coronary interventions, one out of three deaths in North America are attributed to cardiovascular diseases [1]. Thus there is still great need for improved therapies for cardiovascular disease.
