Conventional formulations and emerging delivery systems for the topical treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

The leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by infection with protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. The infection is transmitted by bites from sandflies infected with the parasite. According to WHO, it belong to the group of the top ten neglected tropical diseases, affecting largely the poorest of the poor, mainly in developing countries; 350 million people are considered at risk of contracting leishmaniasis and 12 million of people are currently infected [1].
