Multidetector row computed tomography can provide near-isotropic and isotropic voxels with high spatial and temporal resolution. Volume rendering provides multidimensional postprocessing with segmentation of data that is of high fidelity to the original data set with limitless planes and projections for interpretation. Together they offer greater choice of acquisition and postprocessing parameters that may be tailored to the vessel and pathology of interest. This article will explore the use of multidetector row computed tomography and volume rendering for the assessment of thoracic arterial disease. The discussion will address the technical features as they refer to thoracic arterial imaging and illustrate applications to the thoracic systemic and pulmonary arterial systems.
