Coal is the most important and abundant fossil fuel in India. It accounts for 55 % of the country's energy need. Commercial primary energy consumption in India has grown by about 700% in the last four decades. Indian coal offers a unique eco-friendlyfuelsource to domestic energy market for the next century and beyond. The increasing demand for coal, opencast coal mines are being planned to go to depths and sizes that never considered before. Increased depth also increased the severity of slope stability problems of the opencast mines. With increasing depth of surface mining excavations, the problem of stability of slopes is becoming a major concern. Slope failures in opencast coalmines lead to loss of production, extra stripping costs to remove the failed material, reforming of benches, rerouting of haul roads and production delays. In opencast coal mines blasting and slope stability are very important issues. The stability of final pit slopes affected by regular large production blasting operations. This paper presents a case study of pit slope displament monitoring using total station instrument to find any signs of its instability due to blasting operation.
