The Role of the Practitioner in Legally CoercedPrograms for Male Perpetratorsof Domestic Violence

Programs for male perpetrators are widely regarded as an importantcomponent of any integrated response to the issues elicited by violence within intimaterelationships. At the same time there has been considerable discussion regarding thenature, purpose, and value of different approaches to intervention, often in relation to therather weak evidence that exists to support the notion that programs are effective inbringing about behavior change. This review paper approaches this debate from theperspective of the facilitator and how an understanding of the facilitator's role mightinfluence program outcomes. It is suggested that clarity about goals and how goal conflictis managed by practitioners may be helpful in improving the outcomes of programs fordomestically violent men.
