摘要

FEED industry reps and many farmers recently were understandably nervous when the Food and Drug Administration announced its proposal to launch a national Animal Feed Safety System in 2007. The proposal was developed by an FDA team, most from its Center of Veterinary Medicine. Dan McChesney, CVM director of surveillance and compliance, noted the need to create a comprehensive program ensuring that animal feeds are free of toxic levels of mercury, salmonella, polychlorinated biphenyl, dioxin and mycotoxin. Review of the proposal's main components suggests a more far-reaching plan. The agency would scrutinize feed ingredients, commercial feed mills, on-farm plants, transporters and distributors.
