In his novel The 39^th Day themed on the ＂transfer to civilian work＂, Mei Guoyun has pictured the army and social life in the transition period by delineating the image of Niu Dazhi. In his narrative, characters are constantly cast in the paradoxical situation of life by focusing on the conflict between individu- als and society. As such, Mei Guoyun has rendered his novel as a new footnote for the tradition of realism by conveying social criticism via the spiritual analysis. Having transcended above the topic of ＂ transfer to civilian work＂, The 39^th Day has gone beyond the framework of novels on military affairs.
