Allelopathy has potential to minimize the risks associated with use of synthetic herbicides. Allelopathic effects of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) aqueous extracts on germination and seedling growth of wild chicory (Cichorium intybus L) were investigated in a laboratory bioassay. The trial was replicated thrice in completely randomized design under factorial arrangement with five concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) of sorghum and sunflower water extracts. Data on germination traits and early seedling growth were recorded. Results revealed that germination of chicory was delayed by all extract concentrations while sunflower concentration >50% completely (100%)suppressed germination. All extract concentrations exhibited a pronounced negative influence on early seedling growth of wild chicory that was reduced from 53 to 100% over control for both the extracts. Sunflower water extract was more inhibitory than sorghum water extract. It was concluded that sorghum and sunflower extracts can be used as a natural tool to manage wild chicory.
