Double emulsification in microfluidic devices have been widely studied as it offers precise control over the sizes and size distributions of the droplets. It has applications such as materials synthesis, and cell and active pharmaceutical ingredients encapsulation. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) has been widely used for microfluidic devices because of easier, cheaper and faster fabrication. Meanwhile, PDMS is naturally hydrophobic, thus modification of its surface to hydrophilic is required to obtain double emulsions. So far, many techniques have been reported. However, few can achieve localized surface modification with long-term stability.
