OVERCOMING CHALLENGE OF REMOTE FIELD'S REACTIVATION

Well Y-l, drilled by previous operator in February 1986, proved oil presence in Middle Gharif and was put on production in 1994 but later suspended in 1998 due to high water-cut. Uncertainty in field's potential due to poor seismic data quality, remote location from Karim Small Fields' (KSF) main production facility and near-by local people are the main challenges in developing the field. Latest seismic reprocessing which was completed by PDO in 2015 improved the data quality and showed possibility of having several new infill wells in the field. This evaluation was then followed by good approach in public-relations and socialization and succeeded to overcome the challenges. The field was re-activated by Medco in October 2016 by re-opening the suspended well and producing at lower off-take rate to prevent water coning. The well flowed naturally at initial rate of 195 bopd with 41% water-cut. This result encouraged the drilling of well Y-2 in November 2016 and the well flowed naturally at initial rate of 250 bopd with 0% water-cut. Updated seismic interpretation and new well data led to drilling another additional infill well in the field. The latest well drilled, Y-4, has an initial rate of 365 bopd with 14% water-cut which brought the field oil production rate to 520 bopd. A pipeline was completed in June 2017 to substitute the previous trucking mode, reduce any related HSE risks and allow continuous production to improve oil recovery.
