This study evaluated the differences in animal models of Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) in rats and mice. MPTP was infused into the substantia nigra of male Wistar rats. Male C57BL/6 mice received intraperitoneal injection of MPTP. One day later, the animals were subjected to a battery of behavioral tests for measuring motor function in the rotarod or open field, anxiety level in the elevated plus-maze, learning and working memory in the T-maze or active avoidance test, and recognition in the object recognition test. MPTP lesion in rats caused deficits in motor, anxiety, recognition, and learning abilities. MPTP-treated mice showed only impairments in movement and recognition. These results provide evidence for taking species differences into account when MPTP-treated animals are used as models for PDD.
