The Digestive Diseases Week (DDW; www.ddw.org) is the premier scientific meeting in human gastroenterology worldwide. Every year close to 20,000 people attend the meeting and almost 6,000 research abstracts and hundreds of lectures and interactive sessions are being presented. Many developments that ultimately lead to paradigm shifts in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in human patients, and later on in veterinary patients with similar diseases, are originally presented duringthe DDW. Because of the dramatic impact of this meeting on both human and comparative gastroenterology, the Comparative Gastroenterology Society (CGS; www.cgs-online.org') has decided to highlight the DDW during this year's ACVIM Forum by reporting on new developments from this year's meeting in 4 different areas. The meeting was held from May 1st to May 5th 2010 in New Orleans. Because the proceedings for this session had to be written long before the DDW meeting, the authors have attempted to discussvarious areas within the field they are reporting on where they anticipate developments that may ultimately have an impact on clinical veterinary medicine. Because of this, some areas may not be mentioned in this proceedings manuscript that will be discussed during the session and conversely, some areas discussed in this proceedings manuscript may not be discussed in as much detail during the session if the author feels that the DDW meeting has failed to provide significant developments in this specific area.
