Anemia is defined as the decrease in circulating red blood cells. This can occur due to decreased production, increased destruction (hemolysis) and through the loss (hemorrhage) of red blood cells. This lecture will review the factors impacting the loss of red blood cells, diagnostic tools to identify the primary disease, blood component considerations, and the technician's role in assessing and providing nursing care to the patient.
