Nowadays, an aging population is challenging the traffic system. Research on travel behavior of the elderly is undertaken to reveal intrinsic travel mechanisms and meet their travel demands. In this paper, the travel rules of the elderly were explored via the data drawn from the 2010 Shenzhen Household Travel Survey (SHTS). Based on the descriptive analysis of travel characteristics of the elderly, a NL (nested logit) model, in which the travel mode was set in the upper level and the departure time was set in the lower level, was built for the joint choice of travel mode and departure time by the elderly in order to give deep insight into which and how characteristic variables (including individual attributes, household attributes, and travel attributes) had an effect on the joint choice behavior of the elderly. The results showed that trip purpose was the decisive factor affecting the departure time choice by travel mode. In addition, occupation, distance between residence and bus station, and household size were the main factors that respectively made a difference in the departure time choice of the elderly who traveled by slow traffic, transit, and shuttle bus. What's more, household type and living conditions significantly influenced the choice of private transport by the elderly.
